Four nonprofits are in the running for a $100,000 grant to be decided by a few hundred donors participating in a giving circle. Since 2000, the 21st Century Fund has awarded grants to support nonprofit projects, with the winner selected by a group of funders, including individuals, families and school groups. It’s a program of the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo. The organization has 350 members.

This year’s winner will be the 10th grantee, following winning projects by Explore & More Children’s Museum, the Buffalo Museum of Science, the Buffalo State College Community Maritime Center and the Darwin Martin House restoration.

Eight semi-finalists, selected from 27 applicants, participated recently in table displays and one-on-one questions with 21st Century Fund members.

Members selected the following four finalists:

• Boys & Girls Clubs of Buffalo: The Great Futures renovation project includes an expansion of its Butler Mitchell Clubhouse into a multi-use facility.

• Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens: The project includes reconstruction of two greenhouses and new exhibits.

• Gerard Place: The Education and Community Center Training project includes equipping an industrial kitchen for culinary training and to prepare meals for the homeless and a child-care center.

• Niagara Falls Boys & Girls Club: The 17th Street Clubhouse project involves an upgrade and revitalization of its clubhouse.

A winner will be selected April 13 by majority vote.
